Assistant Chef/Dishwasher

The Balch Hotel, a historic, boutique hotel located in the eastern end of the Columbia Gorge, continues to expand our guest offerings for meals. The ideal candidate will work with the chef and owners to maintain kitchen sanitation and learn to implement a high-quality menu and to provide

award-winning guest service.

You will ensure efficient restaurant operation, as well as maintain high production, productivity, quality, and customer-service standards

Apprentice Opportunities

  • Learn different procedures for food preparation
  • Prepare ingredients for dishes upon the instructions of chef
  • Assist in operating commercial cooking equipment such as stoves, cookers, and ovens
  • Make sure that food supplies are stored properly and used resourcefully
  • Ensure that food items are properly rotated in refrigerators and any near expiry ones are noted
  • Help chefs in cooking activities by providing input and managing work
  • Set up food stations by following chef’s orders
  • Make sure that recipes are followed properly during food preparation and cooking time
  • Handle portion control requirements and presentation standards
  • Arrange food items aesthetically on serving plates
  • Ensure that best food practices and kitchen hygiene protocols are adhered to
  • Assist chef in developing menus and provide suggestions for alternates such as sauces and levels of spice for each entrée
  • Make sure that all leftover food is stored properly
  • Provide input into stock rotation activities and make sure that food inventory is in check
  • Learn and employ the basics of food aesthetics in sync with the restaurant’s set instructions
  • Ability to work with little supervision and maintain a high level of performance.

Duties:

  • Ensure compliance with all health and safety regulations within the kitchen area.
  • Check freshness of food and discard out-of-date items.
  • Communicates and effectively works with others as a team.
  • Make sure that the kitchen is clean and always organized
  • Collect soiled dishes from dining areas and transport them to the kitchen
  • Clean dishes and flatware and ensure that they are rinsed properly
  • Place dishes appropriately in the sanitizer
  • Maintain kitchen work areas and receive and store kitchen supplies
  • Sweep kitchen floor and take the trash out
  • Ensure that the kitchen floor is properly sanitized
  • Ensure that all dish cleaning equipment and supplies are stocked properly
  • Assist kitchen staff with food preparation duties when
  • needed
  • Double as a waiter or sous chef during busy hours
  • Maintain a “clean as you go” work ethic
  • Customer-oriented and friendly. Deal with reasonable
  • complaints/requests, whether related to meals or any other part of their stay, with professionalism and patience.
  • Assist other staff with various guest services needs such as laundry, answering phones and housekeeping if needed.

Requirements:

  • Friendly and inviting disposition.
  • Supporting guest service as the focus of the hotel.
  • Availability to work weekends.
  • Food Handlers Permit.
  • Physical Requirements:
  • Climb stairs and stand for long periods of time.
  • Use stomach and lower back muscles to support the body for long periods without getting tired.
  • Carry up to 30 lbs. up/down flights of stairs.

Housekeeper/Kitchen Assistant

  • This position combines a couple of roles to focus on cleanliness and safety. Our ideal team member:
  • Is flexible, with a positive and friendly attitude
  • Communicates and effectively works with others as a team
  • Hard worker (climbing stairs and carrying 40-50 lbs)
  • Detail oriented, looks for items that need cleaning
  • Brings best self to work (drama-free lifestyle)
  • Follows written and oral instructions, takes initiative

Our housekeepers are part of our team that provides world-class guest service. You will assist guests when necessary.

Duties include:

  • Assembling baskets for breakfast
  • Dish washing and kitchen clean up
  • Housekeeping which includes rigorous movement, bending, lifting
  • Laundry, washing, drying folding and pressing linens
  • Duties also will include food service, yard work and luggage handling. Pretty much anything that makes the place nicer.


Position Details:

  • Part of tip pool shared by all team members
  • Part time-hours vary by season: summer-fall 40+ hours, winter-spring 15-25 hours
  • Days will vary but include weekends.
  • Shift hours will vary.

Must be willing to work evenings and holidays.[Shifts are approximations and also depend on hotel needs – not guaranteed]

Server/Hospitality Specialist

We are seeking a very special person to help us fulfill our mission of providing a unique, boutique hospitality experience that joins the stunning natural beauty of the Columbia River gorge with local, sustainable, community-centered resources in an elegant,

historic, retreat-like setting.

This position is primarily food service but includes other duties to ensure an efficient and smooth

operation for producing world-class guest service and satisfaction.

We are looking for a competent Restaurant Server to take and deliver orders. You’ll be the face of

our restaurant and responsible for our customers’ experiences.

Food Server responsibilities include ensuring our tables are clean and tidy when guests arrive, presenting menus and serving food and beverages. You need to be quick on your feet (literally and metaphorically) and have a polite and friendly attitude.

If you enjoy talking to people and thrive in a fast-paced workplace, we’d like to meet you.

Your goal will be to provide high-quality service that will help us maintain and attract customers.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare restaurant tables with special attention to sanitation and order
  • Attend to customers upon entrance
  • Present restaurant menus and help customers select food/beverages
  • Take and serve orders
  • Answer questions or make recommendations for complementary products
  • Collaborate with other restaurant servers and kitchen/bar staff
  • Deal with complaints or problems with a positive attitude
  • Issue bills and accept payment
  • Assists with hotel reservations, guest inquiries, guest arrival and check-in as well as end-of-day reports
