10-100 Mile Rides from the Balch Hotel
Experience the open, mostly car-less roads, wide expansive views, and incredible weather of Central Oregon! Whether you're up for a short or long ride, we've got the routes for you.
Deschutes River State Recreation Area
89601 Biggs Rufus Hwy
The Deschutes River State Recreation Area is a tree-shaded, overnight oasis for campers. The sparkle-laden, swift, green rush of the Deschutes converges with the Columbia here, and there's no better place for family outing activities like hiking, mountain biking, camping, rafting, world-class steelhead and trout fishing, and equestrian trail riding.
Starting at the Hotel you venture to Condon via Tygh Valley, Maupin, Shaniko, Antelope, and Fossil. Return via Wasco, Biggs Junction and The Dalles.
This loop will take you from Dufur up over Flag Point Lookout, over to Highway 35 and down into Hood River. From Hood River you'll be on the old highway (HWY 30) as much as possible and will return back to Dufur on some nice back roads (all paved).
A sporty ride in both Oregon and Washington. You'll see big forests, big canyons, and lots of curves.
Historic Route 30 Highway
Take in the Gorge at a slower pace on the original highway. Head West from The Dalles towards Mosier and be sure to stop for panoramic views at the Rowena Crest Lookout. Watch for other opportunities to hop on Highway 30 as you continue to travel towards Portland. An excellent choice on a hot day as you wind into the trees and alongside waterfalls. Be mindful of bicyclists and the occasional hiker along the way.
High Desert Rivers: Follow this route to explore some of the rivers, canyons and ghost towns in Oregon's High Desert Region.
Ghost Town Tour: If it is just ghost towns you are looking for this tour takes you through many of the areas best examples. Highlights include Friend, Shaniko and Antelope.
Barlow Road and Timberline Lodge Loop: This route takes you along the route of the pioneers on the Barlow Road. There are many opportunities to see the original wagon ruts as the route climbs into the Cascade Mountains. A stop at Timberline is a must when in the area and our route takes you back through Dufur Valley although you could continue down Highway 35
15 Mile Creek History Tour This route takes you through the rolling hills between Dufur and The Dalles Roughly retracing the rail line with iconic buildings on the way.

Hiking & Fishing
East of The Cascades...
White River Falls State Park
One of Oregon's secret hideaways is located just east of Tygh Valley along Highway 216. The White River plunges 90' over a basalt shelf. The park offers excellent viewpoints of the White River falls. A rugged quarter-mile trail takes hikers down deep within the canyon to the historic hydroelectric power plant at the base of the raw, churning power of the falls. The power plant supplied electricity to Wasco and Sherman Counties from 1910 until the completion of The Dalles Dam in 1960.
Deschutes River State Recreation Area
The sparkle-laden, swift, green rush of the Deschutes converges with the Columbia here, and there's no better place for family outing activities like hiking, mountain biking, camping, rafting, world-class steelhead and trout fishing. Equestrian trail riding permitted March- June with a reservation (closed July-February).The Atiyeh Deschutes River Trail at river level is a favorite jaunt for hikers on hot summer days. You just can't beat the cool river and the shade of white alder trees (and while you're resting, look for the hanging basket-type nests built by the orioles).
This trail is found on the east slope of Mount Hood and follows the Cold Spring Creek. It is an ideal destination to cool off on a hot summer afternoon. The falls are approximately 100 feet high and 40 feet wide. The trail follows Cold Spring Creek and is shaded by large Douglas fir, cedar and a variety of trees and shrubs.
Fivemile Butte Lookout Tower
Ponderosa pines, Douglas-fir and western hemlock provide a dense canopy over the mountainside, shading numerous creeks and providing a lush and varied habitat at Fivemile Butte. While hiking the many trails, be sure to have binoculars on hand and watch for golden eagles, wild turkeys, grouse and the brilliant blue flash of camp robbers, common nickname for Stellar’s jays. Other wildlife, such as elk, deer, coyote, cougars, and bears frequent the area and visit the nearby creeks for a drink or a meal.

Float On SUP Yoga
This is not your usual yoga practice. The postures we explore on the SUP may be familiar to you, but they will feel new. Your core muscles will be working continuously along with your whole body to find balance. At times it may seem subtle, but you'll be tapping into lots of "secondary" muscles that you don't often use.
You'll likely notice that your practice on land benefits too, from a stronger and deeply rooted foundation.
This is a playful yoga practice. An exploration of fun, serenity, and environment -laughter when you fall in for the first time, awe when you see the view from Downward Facing Dog and complete peace when you lay your head back for a floating Savasana.

Soon after, they decided to open La Provence Bakery & Bistro, located in Lake Oswego, Oregon. An opportunity arose to expand to The Dalles, and in 2007, Petite Provence of the Gorge was opened for business. Freebridge Brewing is the dream of a fifth generation Oregon ranch family – Steve Light and Laurie Petroff-Light. On Laurie’s Matriarchal side, Great Grandma Matilda Hendricks walked into Fort Dalles Oregon as a young girl on the Oregon trail. Most likely over the Freebridge. Today, the Petroff family continues to farm wheat and run cattle in the Fifteen Mile Creek valley.
Laurie and Steve have been an obsessed homebrew team for years and Master Brewer, Mike Boler has an extensive twenty-five years experience in the Brewhouse as a pro. Here is where passion and experience are showcased in every beer that leaves the tanks. Our goal: To bring the people in our community- locals and travelers alike- together over stunning craft beers and artisan food.Let's Start Planning
