Yes, I’ve said it before. We have wonderful guests and wonderful employees!
One of our newbies, Frank, is embarking on an amazing adventure he’s very excited about! His enthusiasm is contagious.
This November 5th-12th Frank is traveling to Leogane Haiti (2010 earthquake epicenter) with 400 other volunteers from around the world. He’s participating in the 2011 Jimmy Rosalynn Carter Work Project with Habitat for Humanity to build 100 houses in 5 days!!!
Frank has to raise $5,000 for his trip to pay for food, lodging, transportation, and building materials. He’s raised $1100 so far and is working the Steak Feed at the Threshing Bee this weekend. We launched our “Primp My Bride” sweepstakes last September and BOY was it a ton of fun! One of our goals was to promote local vendors to help provide our brides with the best our area has to offer. Our other goal was to create a following on Facebook and awareness about our renovated (and sunny!) wedding venue. We have been so pleased to have partnered with some of the areas best wedding vendors and to be giving away our sweepstakes (50% off wedding venue and other services) to a very deserving couple, Katie & Brent. We enjoyed it so much we’ve decided to do it again! Here is an interview from our bride and sweepstakes winner Katie Zolman.
How did you hear about the Primp My Bride sweepstakes?
Brent and I were visiting the Balch Hotel with my mother and sister last November when Samantha mentioned the sweepstakes. She gave us the details and how to enter, so Brent and I decided to take a chance.
How did your fiance propose?
The summers end was fast approaching and our weekends were filling up rather quickly. Brent suggested we plan one last trip to Cannon Beach, my favorite place in the whole wide world, while we still could. It was August 21, 2010 and the plan was now in motion, we were to pack a picnic and hit the beach one last time for the summer. We laid down our blankets and cuddled up in the sand. After about 20 minutes, Brent leaned into my right side, said ‘Hi beautiful’ as he always does and told me how much he loved me. He then reached behind his back and pulled out a little red box with a red velvet bow on top, opened it, and asked me if I would marry him. I think I opened with ‘Are you serious?’ and ‘YES!’

How does winning the Primp My Bride sweepstakes affect your wedding plans?
Brent and I had already anticipated getting married at the Balch Hotel, but winning the Primp My Bride sweepstakes really was a huge blessing for us. Aside from the Balch, we have been able to reach out to some really wonderful vendors as well. Brent and I are putting most of this wedding together ourselves so financially we will be able to have the wedding we have been dreaming of instead of cutting corners.
Why had you selected the Balch Hotel?
Originally, Brent and I were dreaming of an April, 2011 wedding and we really wanted something outdoors. We started looking around at venues and found the website for the Balch Hotel in Dufur, OR, the sunniest wedding spot in the Gorge. Of course, the view of Mt. Hood really helps too!
What are you most excited about for your special day?
We are really looking forward to starting a new chapter of our lives together and sharing such a special day with those we love!!

Wild Kingdom – right out our backdoor. Guests have been out and about and have seen some marvelous things!
Last year a guest asked me when the grasses around here were at the perfect “water” state.
This is when they are tall enough to move in the wind and look like waves running uphill. It’s a beautiful sight and I look forward to it every year. Right now is the perfect time!
Lately it’s been hard to stay indoors with all the action happening outside.
Bruce and April DeBolt traveled to White River Falls Memorial weekend and spotted Sandpipers, Western Tanagers, Bullock’s Oriole, and Lewis’s Woodpecker! (Photo courtesy of John Fisher – our guest!)
Here at the Balch the three baby Great Horned Owls with mama or papa were sighted eyeing Joe and Ralph, our Koi (maybe that was my paranoid imagination).
Right now the Indian Paintbrush, Lupine, Bachelor Button, and Balsam Root are in full force.

We had SUCH a great time New Years that we decided to have a 6 month repeat. It will be a fun outdoor affair with the theme: Growing Pains
Does everyone have to tell a story? Nope! It’s possible that not even all who are prepared to tell a story will get to. It will be a volunteer lottery type drawing just like before. If you want to tell your story to win the new pair of shoes for mama, practice, practice practice! Keep your story between 5-10 minutes please.
Please bring your own comfy lawn chair or favorite picnic blanket.
